The Vegetarian Society has unveiled its manifesto for change, calling for a major overhaul of the UK’s food system. The national charity, which campaigns for plant-based living, is urging policymakers to take immediate action to address the environmental, health, and animal welfare impacts caused by current food production and consumption patterns.
The manifesto highlights the pressing need for change, placing climate, biodiversity, public health, and animal welfare at the forefront of the UK’s relationship with food. It outlines a series of policy recommendations, ranging from tax reforms to changes in food labelling, with the goal of making plant-based, sustainable food more affordable and accessible to all.
Jen Elford, Head of Policy at the Vegetarian Society, emphasised the urgency of the situation. “With the election just around the corner and debates sparking across the media, it’s clear that as a nation we face numerous significant challenges,” she said. “From the Society’s perspective, one of the key electoral issues relates to our food system, which is driving climate change, food insecurity, animal welfare issues, and poor health outcomes across society. With our manifesto, we hope to inspire politicians to look at the work already being done in farming, public institutions, and science, and to back a plant-rich future.”
Among the key policy actions set out in the manifesto are proposals for fiscal reform to promote the production and consumption of low-carbon, healthier foods. This includes reforms to agricultural payments, industry levies, and taxation, aimed at encouraging the growth of plant-based foods. The Society also advocates for a shift in land use, calling for a new framework that prioritises the cultivation of plant-proteins for human consumption, rather than arable farming dedicated to animal feed.
In addition, the manifesto addresses public sector food procurement, urging reforms to the Government Buying Standards for Food (GBSF) to increase the provision of plant-based meals in schools, hospitals, and other public institutions. The Society also proposes new labelling standards, which would provide clearer information to consumers about the carbon footprint and health impacts of food, helping people to make more informed choices about what they eat.
The Vegetarian Society’s manifesto comes at a time of growing concern over the environmental impact of food production. The charity argues that transitioning to a plant-based food system is a crucial step in tackling both the climate crisis and public health challenges, particularly as the UK strives to meet its sustainability goals.
Founded in 1847, the Vegetarian Society has been at the forefront of the vegetarian and vegan movement in the UK for over 175 years. Its 2024 manifesto aims to build on this legacy by integrating plant-based initiatives into the UK economy and food system, creating what it describes as a ‘farm-to-fork’ approach for a sustainable future.
The manifesto launch also coincides with National Vegetarian Week, which this year takes place from 1st to 7th October 2024. The Society hopes that its call to action will resonate with policymakers and the public alike, paving the way for a food system that prioritises health, sustainability, and animal welfare.
