Yangzhou City, located in East China’s Jiangsu Province, has long been celebrated for its breathtaking beauty, often referenced in ancient Chinese poetry. Now, the city has earned a new title: a food heaven, following its designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2019.

Since receiving this prestigious recognition, Yangzhou has focused on promoting its culinary heritage by advancing its creative Huaiyang cuisine, one of the Four Great Traditions of Chinese cooking. The city aims to enhance its status as a world-renowned destination for culture and tourism by showcasing its rich history, culinary traditions, and commitment to international exchange.

Visitors to Yangzhou are often encouraged to embark on a delightful food tour that begins with a relaxing breakfast. Locally known as zaocha, or morning tea, this leisurely meal features a variety of delectable pastries and dishes, all served alongside a pot of steaming tea. This traditional breakfast sets the tone for the day’s culinary journey.

For lunch, tourists can choose between traditional Huaiyang dishes or innovative modern interpretations of local flavours. In addition to sampling the local cuisine, visitors are urged to explore the Huaiyang Cuisine Museum and the city’s characteristic blocks, which offer insights into the local culture and culinary practices.

Yangzhou’s food culture, steeped in centuries of tradition, remains vibrant and dynamic. The city has successfully applied for 75 intangible cultural heritage projects related to food, more than 30 China Geographic Indications, and boasts six food-related “China Time-Honoured Brands.” These recognitions not only reflect Yangzhou’s rich culinary history but also its commitment to preserving and promoting its gastronomic heritage.

With a strong emphasis on creativity and innovation in its culinary offerings, Yangzhou is poised to attract food lovers from around the world. The city’s dedication to its culinary arts and heritage makes it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking to experience the depth and richness of Chinese gastronomy. As Yangzhou continues to enhance its global reputation as a Creative City of Gastronomy, it invites visitors to indulge in its unique culinary landscape, showcasing the very best of Huaiyang cuisine.
