A student from Coleg Cambria is set to showcase his culinary talents at one of the world’s most esteemed cooking competitions, the Global Chefs Challenge, taking place in Singapore later this month. Sion Hughes, hailing from Wrexham, will represent the UK in the Senior Chef category.

Currently studying for a Work-based Level 3 Professional Cookery qualification at Coleg Cambria, Sion also holds the position of Spa Head Chef at Carden Park, a luxury hotel located near Chester. His participation in the competition underscores his dedication to the culinary arts and his commitment to professional development.

The Global Chefs Challenge is a highly prestigious event that gathers some of the best chefs from around the globe. Scheduled to run from October 22 at the Expo Centre, the contest will see Sion compete against 15 top chefs, each vying for the title.

In preparation for the competition, Sion has been working closely with award-winning executive chef Graham Tinsley, who has an impressive track record as a competitor in five Culinary Olympics and five Culinary World Cups. Tinsley’s guidance has been invaluable as Sion refines his skills and develops a menu that will impress the judges.

Anwen Regan, a Catering and Hospitality Practitioner at Coleg Cambria, praised Sion’s talent and dedication. “Sion is a credit to himself and the college; he is hugely talented, and his abilities already surpass the requirements of the course, demonstrating his passion for continual growth in his craft,” she remarked. Regan expressed her excitement about Sion’s opportunity, noting that it marks a significant milestone in his career and showcases his potential to make a lasting impact in the culinary world.

Sion secured his spot in the finals after excelling at the European regional heats held in Italy last year. His journey to the Global Chefs Challenge has been marked by hard work and determination, making his achievement all the more commendable.

During the competition, Sion will face the challenge of creating a four-course menu, with each dish designed to highlight his creativity and culinary expertise. This task is not only a test of skill but also a platform for Sion to express his unique culinary vision.

A spokesperson for Carden Park expressed pride in Sion’s accomplishments, stating, “We are incredibly proud of Sion and wish him the very best as he embarks on this exciting journey to Singapore.”

As the competition draws closer, Sion expressed his enthusiasm and readiness for the challenge ahead. “We have worked tirelessly to try and present the best menu possible, and with Singapore just around the corner, the excitement is really starting to build!” he said. “I’m truly honoured to be able to represent my country on the world stage and hope to bring home a great result.”

With his dedication, talent, and the support of his mentors and college, Sion Hughes is poised to make a significant mark at the Global Chefs Challenge.
