As the Autumn season sets in, Starbucks’ beloved Pumpkin Spice Latte has returned, sparking an 862% increase in global searches for the drink since its launch in August. This seasonal favourite, which has become a cultural phenomenon, tends to capture attention each year as temperatures drop and leaves change colour.

However, for those looking to enjoy this popular beverage without the £4.65 price tag at Starbucks, pricing experts at PriceListo have revealed that making a homemade version could cost as little as £1.25. The homemade alternative offers a substantial savings of 73% compared to the café version.

The analysis highlighted the cost of ingredients needed to whip up a Pumpkin Spice Latte at home, with the breakdown revealing that using a whole milk or plant-based alternative will run approximately £0.36 or £0.44 per 236ml, respectively. The total ingredient costs for a single serving are as follows:

    • Whole Milk/Plant-based alternative: £0.36/£0.44
    • Pumpkin (1 tbsp): £0.02
    • Instant Coffee (30ml): £0.34
    • Granulated Sugar (1 tbsp): £0.01
    • Vanilla Extract (7ml): £0.29
    • Ground Cinnamon (pinch): £0.01
    • Ground Ginger (pinch): £0.01
    • Ground Nutmeg (pinch): £0.20
    • Ground Clove (pinch): £0.01

The analysis also noted slight variations in prices depending on where the ingredients are purchased, with supermarkets like Tesco and Aldi being the primary sources. Some products may not be available at Aldi, influencing overall costs.

To make the drink at home, follow this method for one serving:

    1. Preheat your oven to 180°C and line a baking tray with parchment.
    2. Halve a pumpkin and scoop out the seeds (which can be roasted or discarded).
    3. Optionally brush the inside of the pumpkin with vegetable oil and place it cut side down on the baking tray. Pierce the skin with a fork to allow steam to escape during baking. Roast in the oven for 40-50 minutes, or until the flesh is soft enough to pierce with a fork. Allow it to cool.
    4. Once cooled, scoop out the pumpkin flesh and puree it in a food processor until smooth. A few drops of water can be added if necessary.
    5. In a saucepan, combine the milk, pumpkin puree, and sugar over medium heat. Take care not to boil the mixture, as this may cause the milk to curdle.
    6. After the mixture is heated through, stir in the spices, vanilla extract, and 30ml of freshly brewed coffee.
    7. Pour the mixture into a mug and enjoy your homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte!

A spokesperson for PriceListo commented on the trend, saying, “For over a decade, the Pumpkin Spice Latte has not only been a menu staple at Starbucks but has also permeated popular culture, particularly on social media each September. Amid rising food costs, this analysis provides a way for many to indulge in their favourite Autumn beverage without overspending.”

As consumers increasingly seek cost-effective ways to enjoy seasonal treats, the homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte presents an appealing option for Autumn enthusiasts.
