Ibiza recently hosted the inaugural meeting of European sea salt producers, an initiative spearheaded by SEASALT Europe aimed at fostering networking and collaboration within the sector. The gathering took place in the stunning Natural Park of Ses Salines, home to saltworks managed by Salinera Española, the event’s host.

The meeting was designed as an open day, inviting both current SEASALT Europe members and potential new members to connect. While most attendees were affiliated with the association, the event welcomed any European sea salt supplier interested in exploring collaborative opportunities and sharing insights on sea salt production.

Set against the backdrop of the picturesque Ses Salines Natural Park, renowned for its rich biodiversity and unique birdlife, the meeting highlighted how salt production can harmoniously coexist with the preservation of natural ecosystems. This setting provided an inspiring environment for discussions focused on sustainability and innovation in the industry.

Among the participants were representatives from a range of key players in the sector, including Infosa, Bras del Port, Salinera Española, Andaluza de Sales Marinas, Salinas de Levante, Salinas de Cádiz, and Theodorou Salt. The inclusion of new stakeholders, such as Solana Pag, enriched the event and underscored the growing diversity within the European sea salt landscape.

Gonzalo Díaz, President of SEASALT Europe, remarked on the significance of the meeting, stating, “This meeting is a milestone for our industry. Collaboration between European sea salt works is essential to preserve our cultural and environmental heritage while driving innovation and sustainability in sea salt production. Together, we are forging a future where the quality of our salt and respect for our ecosystems go hand in hand.”

The forum aimed to establish a foundation for future collaborations, focusing on how best practices and innovative approaches can enhance the sector’s competitiveness. The event represents a vital step towards creating a robust and united network of sea salt companies across Europe.

Díaz emphasised that the future of the sea salt industry relies on shared knowledge and collaborative efforts. The participants engaged in discussions about the challenges facing sea salt production, including environmental sustainability and the need for innovative practices that can ensure the long-term viability of the industry.

As the meeting concluded, attendees expressed optimism about the potential for future cooperation and joint initiatives that could benefit both producers and the environment. The commitment to innovation and sustainability emerged as a central theme, highlighting the role of sea salt producers in addressing global environmental challenges while maintaining the quality and integrity of their products.

With this first meeting, SEASALT Europe aims to lay the groundwork for ongoing dialogue and partnership among sea salt producers, ensuring that the sector not only thrives but also contributes positively to the preservation of the ecosystems that support it. The gathering in Ibiza marks a new chapter for the European sea salt industry, promising a future where collaboration and respect for the environment are at the forefront of production practices.
