UKindustry criticises royal comments on agchems

The UK Crop Protection Association (CPA) has criticised the Prince of Wales’ “continued vilification of modern farming practices”. Prince Charles recently spoke against the use of “heavily industrialised, chemically-based farming techniques”. The CPA described his views as out of touch with the enormous challenge of securing the world’s future food needs. CPA chief executive Dominic Dyer says that the Prince’s comments reflect the prejudices of the past. He emphasises that the use of pesticides today cannot be judged by the prejudices of 30 or 40 years ago. In the face of global food consumption having outstripped production in seven of the past nine years, technological innovation will play a vital role in delivering the required step change in agricultural production, he adds.
